Toy To The World Opening

Last night I attended the launch of Toy To The World at Artboy Gallery in Prahran. Toy To The World is a biennial custom DIY toy competition that brings together up to 200 artists to unleash their creativity on 200 blank vinyl bears in order to create an exhibition and auction event that raises money to combat HIV through research and development through the Victorian AIDS Council. The project successfully launched in 2010/11 raising $2000 for the Victorian AIDS Council in Melbourne, and returned in 2012/13 to raise $4024 for the VAC, Australia. The project consists of two events, distinct but entwined; the Design Day where the public can have a drink and relax in the Melbourne sun - this year it was at Section 8 - while they watch painters, designers and graff artists take to the blank toy canvas’ with markers, spray cans, cutters and glue, they can even join in if they’re feeling creative; and the second; Exhibition opening and auction, where the project auctions off the creations of these talented artists, raising funds to help bring some joy into the world by contributing to furthering HIV research and treatment development. It was a fantastic night last night - a really great turnout at Artboy and atmosphere was buzzing. Watching peoples faces light up when they discovered a new bear, a different design, was beautiful and whimsical. The creativity and variation in different designs is incredible - some very talented designers, artists and creatives volunteering their creative services, ideas and time to create these wonderful bear designs. I love this project - not just because all proceeds go to Victorian AIDS council, but just the energy the designs create with different patrons, hearing “that’s my favourite” or little gasps is really great.
