OTK Openings 21/10/16
23 October 2016 Comment
Friday the 21st of October at OTK Gallery in Collingwood was a big night - it might have been rainy and wet outside, but the gallery was chock full!
4 fantastic shows opened - “A WORLD OF HIS OWN” by Barek, “DWELLINGS” by Emily Wright, “RUFFLED FEATHERS & GNASHING TEETH” by Michael Cain and “FUNGI FOREST” by Beka Hannah.
Berek’s been busy - hanging two almost floor to ceiling salon hangs of beautiful new work - one wall of coloured paintings and illustrations (and two adorable sculptural works) and another wall of monochromatic, black and white darker works which were gorgeous.
In the back downstairs gallery, Wright’s delicate illustrations of houses moved between architectural and surreal and dreamlike. Evoking memories of Shawn Lu’s exhibition and aesthetic, Wright’s graphite houses, hovering satanically between the real-world and a dream-like void were gorgeous and so intricately illustrated.
Upstairs in the newer gallery space Cain exhibited a series of beautifully delicious pastel paintings and illustrations and a sculptural work. Merging wild animals and confectionary, Cain’s works were almost edible - flourishes of graff colour and spray combined fluidly with forms of wolves, eagles and birds. Too delicious.
Beka Hannah’s Fungi Forest in the final gallery was an experience. Larger than life knitted, crotched giant mushrooms enveloped the gallery, creating a dream-like and kind of nightmarish space. Beautiful and insane works.
Go check the shows out while they are still on.
As usual, the crowd was lovely, friendly, up for a good night and accommodating. OTK is located in Collingwood on Johnston Street and has revolving exhibitions every two weeks.
