House Party a Group Exhibition
18 March 2018 Comment
There is a strange attachment we make with our childhood homes. They are the nests and safe spaces that we learn about the world in, from our infancy. So there is a strange kind of grief / trauma that comes with leaving our childhood homes, and moreso when they are destroyed and demolished. This physical destruction can not touch the intangibility of memories that we have, and yet we imagine the home as a safe space or a monument.
Jessica Wilson invited several artist friends to contribute to a "House Show". Her family home (and a pre war establishment) is about to be demolished. The works inside the abandoned residence evoked her own personal histories with the space as well as the other artist's interpretations and interests.
Featuring the works of:
Anne Kucera
Narinda Cook
Fay Lois as Louise Molesworth
Jess Dubblu
Shae Rooke
and Hahna Blanc
The family photo paste-up works had an anachronistic feel - black and white images larger than life haunting these once embodied rooms.
I found a personal delight in the playful work of the inflated goon sack hills hoist kinetic sculpture and the melted plasticine performance sculpture.
There were water installations, an illustrated video slideshow and narrative in an abandoned bedroom, a "Stranger Things" -esque flickering fairy light installation in the bathroom and video works installed in the empty kitchen on a television screen and a ipad about the history of the home.
If nothing else, what a great excuse for a party.
