BIG SMALL

Comment

Artwork by Zara Sully, Narinda Cook, Elizavata Maltseva, Eddie botha, Hannah Simpkin, Aaron Billings and April Chandler Curated by Matto Lucas “BIG / SMALL” is an exhibition by seven local artists who through various media and works will respond and interact specifically with the Motley Bauhaus’ exhibiting space. Opening on Tuesday June 4th at 6:30pm until 8:30, the exhibition will run until June 15th. “BIG / SMALL” aims to present a fun, contemporary variety of works that will help blur the definitions and expectations of size. Motivated by the possibilities offered by limited space, “BIG / SMALL” invites us to explore the push and pull of space; whether that is physical, real space or psychological, psychic spaces. Inspired by size and its symbolic function, “BIG / SMALL” works to highlight the tensions, struggles and interplay between various forms. Using this asymmetry, the artists make clear the collisions between opposing ideals - desire and need, triumph and loss - and leaves us to question what is left is the space between. In this way, “BIG / SMALL” shows that strict confinement need not inhibit, and in fact can serve as the catalyst for meaning. “My passion for ARI’s (artist run initiatives) and non-traditional spaces is evident in this show - the playfulness, fun and experimentation with contemporary exhibition spaces, such as the Motley, allows artists versatility and most importantly, the ability to play.” – Matto Lucas
