Poetry of Pointlessness

Poetry of Pointlessness is the second iteration in the Pointlessness series of works, beginning with Parade of Pointlessness in 2017.

The Pointlessness works were commissioned for One Night In Footscray Festival.

Poetry Of Pointlessness (or the “Poetry Pig” as I was affectionately dubbed, well, at least until I removed my head…) was a successful experimental interactive performative work in which I roamed the street (and venues) of Footscray writing correct poetry and publishing to a twitter account for people using their first name as a starting point.

I was a mute pig, with only a cardboard sign around my neck to give instruction (a throwback to my appropriated 2017 work “Sorry Nana I Can’t Get Married”)

This kitsch, poor-theatre-of-cruelty performance work was about engaging patrons to consider artists and how artwork or poetry is made, and the possibilities of A.I such as Siri etc in the production of creativity.

It was also about the horrors and darkness that lurks beneath our colourful, happy mascots and logos (such as Twitter.)

But most of all, it was the second engagement in my series of “Pointlessness” works, beginning last year with the Parade of Pointlessness.

These works are more theatrical, more kitsch and more focussed on nihilism as a subject and aesthetic.

From the Website:

“Wandering, somewhere in Footscray, this techno-mancer will use only your name as a starting point to channel the learning algorithm of our Palm-Gods, which attempt autonomous creativity, to write you a poem of complete pointlessness.

To find your unique fortune, written in machine language, look for @OfPointlessness on the tweet algorithm…”
